Whiting was born in Clarke County, Virginia, and grew up surrounded by the natural beauty of the Shenandoah Valley and the Piedmont. While he occasionally paints still lifes, florals, and street scenes, landscape remains the central focus of his work.
His style blends realism with impressionistic sensitivity to light and color, capturing the fleeting atmosphere of a moment and inviting the viewer into the scene.
Whiting describes his process as an ongoing search for what he calls the “magic moment” in painting. “Experience is the best teacher,” he says. “All artists are always seeking to capture that elusive moment when what is before you comes to life.” To keep his work fresh and spontaneous, he often introduces elements of chance—scraping with a palette knife, blending with a large brush, or adding unexpected color that echoes nature itself. For Whiting, the landscape remains an endless source of inspiration, and it is the sense of discovery within the creative process that continues to drive his work.
After earning a B.A. from the University of Virginia, Whiting spent time in Europe and California. He cites early California painters such as Edgar Payne, Maurice Braun, and Alson S. Clark as important influences. Though largely self-taught, he draws on more than three decades of experience as a painter.
