From Kearns' website:
I WAS BORN IN ROCHESTER, MINNESOTA in 1952. My father was a physician and my mother collected eighteenth-century antiques. She liked to visit historic homes, museums, and antique shops, taking me along when she discovered I enjoyed those things as well. In the mid-sixties, she bought a large English landscape by John Tenant that was painted in 1850, and hung it above the mantle of our home. I was so impressed with that painting that I decided one day, I would be a painter myself. I left high school early in order to more fully participate in the 1960s. One year later, I began art school at Minneapolis College of Art and Design and then transferred to the University of Minnesota. Neither one taught me much about the sort of painting I intended to do.
Currently, I am living on Cape Ann, in the 400-year-old seaport of Gloucester, about forty-five minutes north of Boston. I own and run the Stapleton Kearns Gallery in Rockport where I show my own art and that of my wife Dale Ratcliff. I have served on the board of governors of the Rockport Art Association and as its president for five years. I am also a member of the Guild of Boston Artists and sat on their board for many years as well. I was recently awarded the Christopher A. Hamilos Award for “Best in Show” in the Rockport Art Associations and Museums 2023 National Show.
