After studying art, literature, and languages at the State University of New York, he worked as a natural history illustrator and participated in ornithological research across North America.
Rizos has received numerous artist residencies and visiting artist appointments, including at Acadia National Park and the Adirondack Park Visitor Interpretive Centers. His work has earned major honors, including the Gold Medal of Honor from Allied Artists of America for his etching DeWinton’s Pool, and awards for his sculpture Marbled Godwits.
A member of organizations including the National Arts Club, the Salmagundi Club, and the Society of Animal Artists, Rizos’s work is held in the permanent collections of the United States Library of Congress, the George W. Bush Presidential Library, and the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art. He lives in Arizona and continues to travel extensively to study birds for his paintings, sculptures, and original prints.
