John Douglas was born in Kansas and has spent most of his life in the American Southwest. He studied painting, drawing, and other artistic disciplines at Arizona State University on an art scholarship, with additional coursework in California. His early creative influences grew out of direct engagement with the varied landscapes of the Southwest.
A passionate traveler, Douglas has explored destinations across the globe, with particular affinity for Thailand, Florence, Vienna, Prague, and the Amalfi Coast. He has also made numerous visits to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Tate in London—institutions he describes as deeply moving and enduring sources of inspiration.
Douglas cites modern masters such as Francis Bacon and Salvador Dalí among his influences.
