Jacob Moses Semiatin (1898–1968) was an American painter best known for his expressive landscapes, cityscapes, and modernist interpretations of everyday scenes. Born in New York City to Russian-Jewish immigrant parents, Semiatin studied at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League, where he developed a strong foundation in academic drawing before embracing a more painterly, impressionistic style.
Working primarily in the mid-20th century, Semiatin was drawn to the energy of urban life as well as the quiet beauty of coastal and rural environments. His work is characterized by confident brushwork, a rich, often moody palette, and an emphasis on atmosphere over fine detail. Influenced by both American Impressionism and elements of European modernism, he captured fleeting moments with a sense of immediacy and emotional depth.
Semiatin exhibited widely during his lifetime, including at the National Academy of Design and various regional exhibitions, earning recognition for his ability to balance structure with spontaneity. Today, his paintings are appreciated for their timeless quality and their evocative portrayal of mid-century American life.
