The Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) is an international fraternal organization that is not political or tied to any religion. It was founded in 1819 by Thomas Wildey in Baltimore, Maryland. The group grew out of the Odd Fellows organization that began in England in the 1700s. The IOOF was first chartered by the Independent Order of Oddfellows Manchester Unity in England, but it became an independent organization in 1842, while still maintaining a friendly relationship with the English Order. The group is also called the Triple Link Fraternity, named for its “Triple Links” symbol, which represents its motto: “Friendship, Love, and Truth.”
