Vintage Grand Union American flag with ribbon ties intact. The Grand Union Flag, also known as the Continental Colors or the Cambridge Flag is considered the first national flag of the United States. The flag was used during the early stages of the American Revolutionary War. It features 13 red and white stripes, representing the Thirteen Colonies. The canton (the upper left corner) contains the British Union Flag, which symbolized the colonies' continued loyalty to Great Britain at the time. The Grand Union Flag was replaced by the "Stars and Stripes" on June 14, 1777, when the Continental Congress authorized the new design. Flag in antique, oval black wood frame with gilt liner measures 12.5" x 14.5", and is mounted under glass. Flag has light patina. Frame in very good antique condition with scattered light wear.
