Edna Hibel (1917–2014) was an American painter and lithographer celebrated for her lyrical depictions of mothers, children, and universal human connection. Born in Brookline, Massachusetts, she studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and began exhibiting in the 1940s. Over her long career, she became known for her technical mastery and innovation in lithography, often creating richly layered prints on materials like silk, porcelain, and wood veneer using up to 32 stones. Her delicate color palettes and expressive, classical style earned her international recognition, with exhibitions in more than 20 countries.
Hibel’s art was also deeply humanitarian, as she used her work to support numerous charitable causes and was honored in 2001 with the Leonardo da Vinci World Award of Arts. In 1977, the Hibel Museum of Art opened in Florida, dedicated to preserving and sharing her legacy. A prolific artist to the end, Hibel painted daily well into her nineties, leaving behind a body of work that continues to resonate for its warmth, elegance, and enduring message of compassion.
