Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dorothy Van Loan was a modernist painter who studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Philadelphia Print Club, and the Philadelphia Sketch Club. She exhibited throughout the United States including the Carnegie Institute, Mint Museum of Art, Los Angeles Museum of Art, and the Washington Watercolor Club.
