Antique, engraved and hand colored map of France by Willem (Guilielmus) Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638). Titled Les Souverainetez de Sedan et de Raucourt et la Prevosté de Doncheri. This is a 17th-century map of northeastern France, centered on the sovereignties of Sedan and Raucourt and the provostship of Donchery, a border region near present-day Ardennes, close to the Duchy of Luxembourg and the Prince-Bishopric of Liège.Map in custom gold frame measures 24.5" x 29". Map and frame in very good condition.
Johannes Janssonius (Dutch, 1588–1664) was one of the most influential mapmakers and publishers of the Dutch Golden Age, a period when Amsterdam stood at the center of global trade and scientific inquiry. Trained in a family of printers and engravers, Janssonius built an international reputation for producing maps and atlases celebrated for their clarity, accuracy, and refined engraving.
Working in close dialogue—and at times direct competition—with the Blaeu family, Janssonius helped elevate cartography into both a scientific and decorative art form. His most ambitious achievement, the Atlas Novus (later expanded into the multi-volume Atlas Major), set a new standard for scale and visual sophistication in printed atlases. Janssonius’s works were widely collected by scholars, merchants, and nobility, reflecting the era’s fascination with exploration and the expanding known world.
Today, maps by Johannes Janssonius are prized for their historical significance, elegant design, and enduring presence as works of art as much as instruments of geography.
