Anthony R. Thompson (American, b. 1944) is a signature member of the American Society of Marine Artists and an official U.S. Coast Guard Artist whose work is held in the collections of the U.S. Coast Guard, Immaculata University, the Bucks County Conservancy, and numerous corporate and private collections. He has exhibited widely, including regular exhibitions at Mystic Seaport’s International Maritime Gallery.
A retired Naval Aviator and former Pan Am World Airways pilot, the Bucks County, Pennsylvania artist paints the sea with the authority of someone who has lived it. Decades of firsthand maritime and global experience inform his distinctive body of work.
Largely self-taught, Thompson works primarily in oil, depicting late 19th- and 20th-century maritime subjects, contemporary coastal scenes, and Bucks County landscapes. His imagery draws from years spent sailing the Delaware and Chesapeake Bays, Cape Cod, Maine, and the Virgin Islands—places he knows intimately both from the water and the air.
