Clarence Henry Roe (British, 1850–1909) was a Victorian landscape painter known for his evocative depictions of the Scottish Highlands and the English countryside. The eldest son of painter Robert Henry Roe, he was part of a remarkable family of artists and developed a distinctive talent for capturing rugged mountain landscapes, tranquil lochs, winding streams, and Highland wildlife.
Born in Birmingham, Roe spent much of his life in Yorkshire, while the dramatic scenery of Scotland became a recurring subject throughout his career. Working primarily in oil, he brought a rich sense of atmosphere and mood to his landscapes, often contrasting expansive skies and distant mountains with the quiet presence of deer and figures. His paintings reflect the Victorian fascination with the romance and wild beauty of the Highlands.
Roe exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy and his work is represented in collections including the Ferens Art Gallery, Southampton City Art Gallery, Nottingham, and the Mercer Art Gallery. Today, his paintings remain admired for their atmospheric landscapes and timeless sense of place.
