Spectacular early 20th century oil on canvas painting of Gloucester, MA. Dated 1932. A gaggle of sailboats sit in the calm waters of a Gloucester harbor under pink cotton candy clouds. A light on in the boathouse. Signed lower right "T. Bailey" - a mysterious early 20th century artist...
A charming mystery surrounds the maritime paintings by artist and painter "T. Bailey." London-born salesman Morris Hambro immigrated to America in 1865. Around 1910, Hambro bought unsigned paintings from unsuspecting, talented Massachusetts artists, affixed the T. Bailey signature, and sold them door-to-door throughout New England, gaining a substantial profit. It's unknown who all the exact T. Bailey artists are, but it's speculated that among the original painters are Max Berman, Sears Thompson, Mae Bennet Brown, Vivian Forsythe Porter, Melbourne C. Hardwick, William Frederick Paskell, and J. G. Cloudman. At the time, a gallery in Boston allegedly purchased the paintings in bulk. It is obvious that this particular work was done by a masterful artist, and most closely resembles the work of William Paskell.
The art in frame measures 11.75" x 15". Both the painting and frame are in very good condition. The only flaw to note is a 0.25" indentation in the top right skyline. Otherwise, it is in excellent condition.
