Johan Neumann (1860–1940) was a Danish marine painter known for atmospheric seascapes depicting ships and coastal life along Scandinavia’s shores. Born in Copenhagen, he initially trained as a mill builder like his father before pursuing art under the guidance of his uncle, the noted maritime painter Carl Neumann. His early works often portrayed dramatic naval scenes from Denmark’s history, while later paintings shifted toward more naturalistic coastal views featuring both traditional sailing vessels and modern steamships. Neumann frequently painted along the coast of northern Zealand, capturing changing light and weather at sea. His work is represented in the collection of the Vejle Art Museum.
