Niels Christiansen (Danish, 1873–1960) was a Danish landscape painter known for his naturalistic depictions of rural life and pastoral scenery. Born in Eskebjerg near Kalundborg, Denmark, he trained at a technical school where he developed his skills in drawing and painting before pursuing a professional career as an artist.
Christiansen specialized in tranquil countryside scenes, often featuring grazing horses, cattle, and other domestic animals set within the Danish landscape. His paintings reflect a calm, observational approach to nature, with careful attention to light, atmosphere, and the rhythms of agricultural life.
During his career, Christiansen traveled widely throughout Europe and the Middle East, visiting countries including Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Romania, Turkey, Palestine, and Egypt. These travels broadened his artistic outlook, though his subject matter remained rooted in the quiet beauty of rural landscapes.
From 1917 onward he exhibited at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition in Copenhagen and was associated with the Kunstnerforeningen af 18. November (the Artists’ Society of November 18). His paintings gained popularity among collectors for their peaceful pastoral themes and traditional naturalistic style.
Today, Christiansen’s work is appreciated for its serene portrayals of the Scandinavian countryside and its place within the tradition of early twentieth-century Danish landscape painting.
