Helge Helme (Danish, 1894–1987) was a Danish painter best known for his refined figurative works depicting women in quiet, intimate settings. Born in Roskilde, Denmark, Helme studied at the Technical School in Roskilde before continuing his training at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1918 to 1920.
Helme’s work reflects a strong academic foundation combined with a sensitivity to mood and composition. He developed a particular interest in the female figure, often portraying models at rest, reading, or absorbed in everyday moments. His paintings are characterized by graceful poses, balanced compositions, and a soft, naturalistic palette that emphasizes atmosphere and quiet introspection.
During the 1920s and 1930s, Helme traveled widely throughout Europe, including France, Germany, Britain, and the Netherlands. These travels broadened his artistic outlook and exposed him to a range of contemporary European figurative traditions.
Helme exhibited regularly in Denmark, including at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition in Copenhagen, and held early solo exhibitions in the city’s galleries. In addition to his painting practice, he founded a painting school in Copenhagen, where the future Danish modernist Richard Mortensen was among his students.
Although best known for his intimate figure studies, Helme also painted landscapes and interiors, applying the same careful attention to light, form, and composition. Today his work is appreciated for its quiet elegance and its place within the tradition of early twentieth-century Scandinavian figurative painting.
