Frederick “Fritz” Kubitz has led a remarkable life, making significant contributions to both art and architecture on local and international stages. His passion for drawing and painting emerged early, winning the Chicago Tribune Bird Contest at age nine. Encouraged by his father’s colleagues at the University of Illinois, Kubitz pursued architecture, earning a BFA that included extensive art training—an experience he greatly enjoyed. Early artistic influences included Theodore “Ted” Kautzy, whose pencil sketches and watercolors inspired Kubitz, along with artists Tom Nicholas and Paul Strisik.

After graduating, Kubitz served as an officer in the U.S. Army during the Occupation of Germany, and his European travels profoundly shaped his desire to capture the world on paper. Returning to the U.S., he earned a Master’s Degree in Architecture from MIT and went on to work with Eero Saarinen, contributing to iconic projects such as Logan International Airport’s Terminals C, D, and E, the Fenway Theatre’s conversion to the Berklee Performance Center, as well as projects at JFK, Dulles International Airport, and the American Embassy in London. Over the past thirty years, Kubitz has focused on painting a diverse range of subjects—from Maine harbors and Cape Cod dunes to Vermont countryside, New Hampshire ski trails, Boston cityscapes, and scenes from his travels across the U.S. and Europe in both watercolor and oil. A longstanding member and past president of the Watercolor Society of America, he has also held leadership roles in the American Society of Marine Artists, the Guild of Boston Artists, the New England Watercolor Society, and the Rockport Art Association, earning numerous awards along the way. As one American Watercolor Society article notes, Kubitz possesses “an intuitive ability in choosing appealing subject matter, plus a unique sense of style, placement, and dramatic use of lighting effects,” making his work highly sought after by collectors worldwide. In his own words: “If it’s in there and it has to come out, you are an artist; if it’s in there and doesn’t come out, you are a patron.”
