Early 20th century oil painting on canvas portrait of the American steamship Rosedale. Playfully executed. The ship flies both the Rosedale and the American flags. Deemed one of the most handsome steamboats of her class ever to sail the waters of the Hudson river, the Rosedale was a passenger sidewheeler steamboat that ran first on the Hudson beginning in 1877, and later traveled to Coney Island, Rockaway Beach, Philadelphia via the Delaware River and finally to Norfolk, Virginia where she was ravaged by a fire in 1922. Signed Layton at lower left. Dated 1902 on the reverse. Canvas is on “Bay State Stretcher made by Wadsworth Howland & Co. Inc. Boston Mass." Artwork in simple black painted wood artist's frame measures 16.25" x 23.25". Artwork in good condition with light, age appropriate wear. Frame in good condition with scattered wear (scratches, dings).
